Reducing Your Risk of Telephone Fraud

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Fraud is unfortunately all too common. Though we would like to believe all of us know better, many fraud victims fall prey to unscrupulous individuals who are quite competent at executing scams. A prime example is a telephone scam that involves a fraudulent vacation. If you want to protect yourself and your loved ones from this con, read on…

Playing On Our Desires

Fraud that involves vacation scams works because they prey upon our desire to win a luxury vacation. After all, who wouldn’t want to travel the world for free? However, this scam has nothing to do with traveling the world.

The caller usually claims that because the sweepstakes is foreign, you will have to wire money to cover certain fees. In some cases, you are sent an advance check to cover the fees so everything seems legitimate. It’s not until after you deposit that check into your bank account that you find out the check was a fake and you owe your bank money.
A Word to the Wise

If something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. The best thing is for you to do is not respond to any phone solicitations regarding vacation sweepstakes, especially if it requires money up front.

If you win a vacation, do you really want to have to front money to take advantage of the winnings? You shouldn’t have to. In most cases, if you have to front money for a prize you won, then it is usually a scam or fraud.

And don’t fall for the “tax” speech. Yes, you have to pay taxes on winnings, but you don’t pay them to the company you won the prize from -- you pay them directly to Uncle Sam.

Another way to avoid becoming a victim of fraud over the phone is to screen your phone calls. Get caller ID. If you don’t recognize the number, don’t pick up. You can reduce the risk that you will fall victim to fraud if you don’t respond to unsolicited phone calls.

Transfer files between PCs with the W890i

Monday, July 7, 2008

The Sony Ericsson W890i is not just a phone - it's a data storage device, and you can easily use it to transfer files between your home and office PCs

You can use the Memory Stick Pro Duo in the Sony Ericsson W890i to transfer files between a work PC and home PC, uploading or downloading via cable or Bluetooth at either end. As the Memory Stick Pro Duo comes in capacities as high as 8GB, this can offer invaluable storage space.

Data files (Word or Excel documents, for instance) can be carried in the W890i's Other folder. Files copied into this folder can be accessed via the File manager on the phone itself, or by opening the Other folder on the PC if the phone is connected via USB.

Copying to the phone via Bluetooth
Follow the instructions at Using Bluetooth on the W890i to create a Bluetooth connection. When the W890i's Bluetooth mode has been activated, you can copy a file from your PC to the phone. The W890i will automatically put it in the Other folder in the File manager.

Copying to PC via Bluetooth
Find the uploaded file in the Other folder by highlighting File manager in the main menu and clicking Select. Then highlight Other and click Open to open the folder. Highlight the file you want to send, click More, highlight Send, click Select, highlight Via Bluetooth and choose the destination PC from the search list by highlighting it and clicking Select again.

Copying to the phone via USB cable
Follow the instructions at Use your phone as a USB drive to create a USB connection between the W890i and a PC. When the phone appears as a USB drive in the My Computer window, double-click the icon to show the folders inside. Copy the file or files from your PC, dragging and dropping them over the Other folder.

Note: On a Mac the W890i's Memory Stick will appear in the Finder window as a removable drive. Simply drag and drop the files to the Other folder listed within this drive.

Copying to PC via USB cable
Follow the same process in reverse - connect the phone to the destination PC using the USB cable provided, and when the phone appears as a USB drive in the My Computer window, double-click the icon to show the folders inside. Open the Other folder and drag the file or files onto the destination PC.

German study: Mobile phones no health risk

Friday, July 4, 2008

One in four Germans who worry that mobile phones and their transmission towers are health hazards can now relax a little following studies coordinated by the Berlin-based Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).

German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that more than 50 studies in the German Mobile Telecommunications Research Programme (DMF), conducted from 2002 to 2008, had found no evidence that mobile phones and transmission towers posed a health risk within the required limits for electromagnetic radiation.

The programme was funded with 17 million euros (26 million dollars), a small sum compared with the billions of euros that the German government collected when it auctioned licenses for slices of Germany's UMTS airwave spectrum in 2000. Though the country's four mobile network operators provided half of the research funds, the BfS
told critics that DMF procedures had ensured the objectivity of the studies.

Research focused on the functioning mechanisms of high frequency electromagnetic fields in mobile telephony, the fields' effect on humans and animals, and the amount of electromagnetic radiation to which the German public is exposed.

Several studies looked at possible effects on what is known as the blood-brain barrier, a kind of filter that prevents harmful substances in the blood from reaching neurons in the brain. According to the BfS, the studies found no conclusive evidence that radiation from mobile telephony significantly weakened the blood-brain barrier.

Three studies dealt with the 1.5 per cent of Germans who describe themselves as "electrosensitive" and blame various health problems on electromagnetic fields.

Since the ailments are typically things like headaches and sleep disorders, which could have many causes, establishing a link to electromagnetic radiation is very difficult.

How to back up your Sony Ericsson W580i onto your PC

Sunday, June 29, 2008

All Sony Ericsson mobile phones, the W580i included, come with the Sony Ericsson PC Suite, a software tool that allows you synchronise your handset with a Windows PC.

The most obvious use for this is backing up your contacts from your SIM card into Outlook (or Outlook Express), in case the worst should happen and your handset gets lost or stolen. But the PC Suite doesn’t just keep your SIM contacts safe – you can also use it to synchronise your Calendar, Notes and Tasks as well if you have a full copy of MS Outlook.

Inside your W580i box, you’ll find a CD with the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software installer. Insert this into your PC to begin installation. If you don’t have the CD you can also download the software directly from the Sony Ericsson website. Once the installation is complete, you’ll be able to run the PC Suite application. Recent versions are much more straightforward to use than previous ones and you’ll see all the various tools laid out in a convenient menu.

To begin using the tools, you need to connect your handset to the computer. The fastest and most straightforward way of doing this is to use the supplied USB cable. Plug it into your handset and a spare USB port on your PC.

Once it is plugged in, your phone will show a new menu that will ask you if you want to enter File transfer or Phone mode (Figure 1). To synchronise, you need to use Phone mode; scroll down once to highlight it and press Select.

Once your PC has recognised the phone and automatically installed the correct drivers, the menu will disappear and the PC Suite will inform you that your W580i is connected.

Now you can use your PC to do the rest. You will normally just use the Synchronisation button to back up your information, but first it is worth making sure that the settings are correct. Click on Sync Manager, then Settings to adjust the settings. Within the menu is a list of the different types of information you can synchronise: Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes (Figure 2). Clicking on these will expand the menu on the left hand side and give you a few basic options, or you can just use the Wizard to talk you through it.

The main thing you need to do is make sure that your information is going to the right program. If you have a full copy of Microsoft Office, you will probably want to ensure that everything goes into your copy of Outlook. If you don’t, you can make do with Windows Address Book / Outlook Express – use the drop down menu to select the correct program (Figure 3).

If you have a more up to date contact listing on your SIM card than on your PC, it will be worthwhile temporarily using the manual settings to set the Conflict Policy in the side menu to Overwrite PC content (Figure 4). If you want the PC information to overwrite your phone’s information, you can set the Conflict Policy to keep the PC item instead of the phone content. However, if in doubt, click the Use last item modified radio button to ensure that whichever information was most recently edited has priority.

Once you’re happy with your settings, click OK to return to the PC Suite’s main menu and click Synchronise Now (Figure 5). This begins the synchronisation process and will present you with a summary of the items changed when completed (Figure 6).

If your PC has integrated Bluetooth or a Bluetooth dongle, you can synchronise your phone wirelessly. Once your handset is paired to your PC, double click the Bluetooth icon in your taskbar and then double click on your mobile phone icon to connect to it. You will automatically enter Phone mode as above and can begin synchronisation.

Tip: Although the Sony Ericsson PC Suite is not compatible with Mac operating systems, Mac OS X users can use iSync instead. This allows you to synchronise contacts and calendar entries within iCal.

How to fix a 'frozen' iPhone

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

Occasionally your Apple iPhone may hang or 'freeze' during an operation. We show you how to unfreeze an unresponsive iPhone without doing a full Restore in iTunes

Not necessarily the kind of frozen iPhone we meant but you get the (snow) drift

If this happens there are two solutions you should try first:

Option 1: press and hold down the Home button on the front of the iPhone for at least 6 seconds. In most cases this should shut down the unresponsive application and return you to the main menu

Option 2: if option 1 didn't work then you will need to reset the iPhone. You can do this by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button on the top the iPhone's case and holding them down together for 10 seconds. The iPhone should then reset itself and return to the locked state

If neither of these two options fixes your unresponsive iPhone then you should connect it to your Mac or PC and launch iTunes. Click on the Summary tab and then click on the Restore button.

This will restore your iPhone to its factory settings and install the latest version of the iPhone operating software. It will also erase all the songs, videos, calendar and contact information on the iPhone. (Though it is easy enough to reinstall that info by syncing with iTunes when the iPhone is fixed).

If none of the above methods fixes your iPhone you will need to call the retailer who supplied it to you.

How to add new programs onto your iPhone

We show you how you can install new third-party games, utilities and applications to your iPhone

Warning: Recent Apple Software updates may 'brick' your iPhone if you carry jailbreak it or unlock the handset from Apple's preferred network provider.

The Apple iPhone was designed to be a closed system with Apple preventing any third-party applications, games or utilities being added to it.

However because the operating system is based on Unix industrious programmers have already found various methods of bypassing Apple's 'barriers' and allowing people to add new software to their iPhones.

At first this meant a lot of rather scary programming processes with names like 'jailbreak' which were enough to have the typical iPhone user running for the hills while cradling their iPod protectively.

But in recent weeks many of these indimidating command line routines have matured into simple, easy-to-install programs that safely open your iPhone to new features such as IM, RSS readers, games and more.

One of the best of these is called AppTapp and it's now available for both Windows and Mac computers - although inevitably it's easier to install on Macs.

Windows Instructions

1. Download iBrickr to your PC
2. Connect your iPhone to your PC
3. Run iBrickr and follow the onscreen instructions
4. Once iBrickr is up and running click on the Applications link then click the Browse Applications button
5. Scroll through the list of applications until you come to Installer. Install this onto your iPhone. You should now see an Installer icon on your iPhone's main menu

Mac Instructions

1. Download AppTapp to your computer
2. Run AppTap and follow the onscreen instructions
3. When it asks for you iPhone's firmware version check by going to the main menu, click on Settings then General and then About. Check the number next to Version - in this case it's 1.0.2 Choose your version and click Continue
4. The application will install and the iPhone will restart. You should now see an Installer icon on your iPhone's main menu

Using Installer

Installer is a clever application because its uses your iPhone's networking capabilities - via EDGE or WiFi - to access a central database of software programs and updates.

Click on the Installer icon on the main menu and it will automatically download links to all the latest software on its servers - it may even offer to update the Installer application itself. If it does click on Update and then click on the iPhone's Home button

Click on the Installer icon again. You should see a long list of programs subdivided by categories such as Featured, Development, Games, Multimedia, Network, Ringtones, System, Toys, Tweaks, Utilities and Wallpaper

The four buttons at the top of the Installer screen let you Install, Update and Uninstall programs - while the Sources button lists the providers of the programs you have already installed on your iPhone.

Installing a program

1. Click on the Install button
2. Click on the program you want to install. You will see a screen showing you information about the software including its version number and size.
3. Click on the Install button and then Yes to install the program
4. The software will be downloaded and copied onto the iPhone
5. When the transfer has finished click on the Home button
6. Your iPhone will then lock itself. Unlock the iPhone and you should see the icon of the program you installed in the main menu. Click on the icon to launch the program as usual

Uninstalling a program

1. Go to the main menu and click on Installer
2. Click on the Uninstall button
3. Click on the program you want to uninstall
4. Click on the Uninstall button to remove the program and click Yes to confirm. The program will be uninstalled and you will go back to a list of third-party programs that remain on your iPhone

Updating a program

Note: when you launch Installer it should automatically list any programs that have updates available - the icon will have a numeral on it in the same way as the Mail icon shows unread emails.

1. Go to the main menu and click on Installer
2. Click on the Update button
3. A list of programs that have available updates will appear. Click on the program you want to update
4. Click on the Update button to update the program and click Yes to confirm. The program will be updated and you will go back to the list of third-party programs that have available updates.
