Software features of Nokia S40 6th Edition
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
What’s new in the 6th edition
The change log of the 6th edition is pretty lengthy, so in this preface we are going to cover the most vital of them and leave the rest for specific parts of this review. It’s important to emphasize that a number of features have been around since the fifth edition of the platform – for instance, certain views of the phonebook, transition effects and some other bits and pieces that are all attributes of S40 6th edition, in fact, are employed on some other phones too. However it’s only in the 6th edition that they have made it into the platform’s default feature pack.
* Transition effects were the cornerstone of S60 FP2 update and they did a great job adding new flavors to the user interface. So now feature phones can benefit from this feature, as they have added one effect that makes pop-up windows with notifications appear on the screen smoothly. While these special effects are eye-candy, occasionally they seem somewhat sluggish due to the CPU’s insufficient speed;
* Full-fledged support for Flash Lite 3 that allows running games and various animated swf files, including time- and date-conscious wallpapers;
* Support for WiFi that extends beyond VoIP – data connections are now available too
* Enhanced phonebook, revamped email client;
* New browser building upon WebKit open source project;
* Maps application integrated into the platform, although its an older version compared to the app found in S60-powered devices;
* Support for new Java APIs - JSR-179 Location API, JSR-205 – Wireless Messaging API;
* OMA Message 1.3;
* Horizontal scrolling of lists in the user interface;
* Themes now apply to radio application and multimedia player;
* New UI elements – pop-up windows;
Actually, it’d take us much longer than that to list all additions and tweaks introduced with the new edition of the platform, so we are going to stop right here. There are several reasons why the release of the sixth edition is very crucial to the entire world of S40 – first of all, it indicates that all successful ideas of S60 are going to get carried over to the “junior” platform. This way, the sixth edition comes preinstalled with transition effects, an open source browser, Flash Lite, and Maps. Although there is no way these two platforms will merge any time soon – they’ll just get a great deal closer, but that’s about it. In fact, all new features and ideas will be implemented in S60 first and then spread down to S40-based devices. As of today, in terms of features these two platforms are a year away from each other, which isn’t all that much in the context of the mobile phone market.

Hitonic MIDlet Protector - New Release 1.1.0
Sunday, July 20, 2008Recent Changes:
The new "Send SMS message" feature was added in version 1.1.0 of the program.
Program description:
Hitonic MIDlet Protector modifies MIDlet JAR files and sets various limitations on launching MIDlets (a simple startup banner, a simple launch password, runtime limitations, launch date limitations, launch count limitations, send SMS message). This tool is useful to protect mobile phone applications created automatically, for example, through bookreaders.
The interface is easy to use. You only need to specify the MIDlet JAR file, specify the type of protection with its options and click the PROTECT button.
The SIMPLE BANNER protection displays additional information during the MIDlet launch. There are some options concerning displaying the banner text. The information is displayed for the specified time or until the key is pressed.
If the SIMPLE PASSWORD type of protection is used, launching the MIDlet will require the password. There is an option that describes the MIDlet lock type. The lock type may be ONCE (the MIDlet first launch) or ALWAYS (every time the MIDlet is launched).
About the RUNTIME LIMITATION protection. When the MIDlet is launched for the first time, the time and date of the launch will be saved. There is an option that defines the number of days the MIDlet can be launched for. After this time expires, it will be impossible to launch the MIDlet.
The "Last work date" option is available if you use the LAUNCH DATE LIMITATION type of protection. It will be impossible to launch the MIDlet after that date.
The "Number of launches" option is available if you use the LAUNCH COUNT LIMITATION protection. After the MIDlet has been launched the specified number, it will be locked.
If the SEND SMS MESSAGE type of protection is used, launching the MIDlet will require the user to send SMS message. The phone number and the text for the SMS message are specified in the options. The SMS message is sent only during the first launch of the MIDlet.
This program is shareware, i.e. you can test this demo version during the trial period (20 days).

How to convert itunes m4p to mp3
The music files you purchased from online music stores like iTunes, Yahoo! Music or Wal-Mart are under DRM protection. You cannot play them on your own mobile devices other than iPod and iPhone. You cannot convert the DRM protected music files to MP3 or WMA directly with iTunes media player, either. However you can burn the protected music files to CD-R or CD-RW disc to make an audio CD and then use some CD ripper software to convert the audio CD track back to MP3, WAV, WMA, etc. And iTunes allows you to burn the protected music files to CD-R or CD-RW disc to make a standard audio CD. If you have only a few music files, you can use the method below:
1. Insert a CD-R or CD-RW disc into your CD-ROM drive. You'd better use CD-RW disc as it can be used for more than once.
2. Burn your playlist to make an audio CD. You cannot select the MP3 CD option since it requires the protected music files be converted to unprotected MP3 files.
3. After the audio CD is successfully burned, insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive again. Then you can use iTunes to import the music tracks on the burned disc to MP3 files.
4. Copy the MP3 files to media players such as cell phone, Zune, BlackBerry, PSP, Creative Zen, etc. and enjoy them.
These four steps seem very simple, however, it is a time consuming process if you have a library of music files ready to be converted. Moreover, the information of the music files like title, artist and album will be lost after burning and ripping back to MP3 files.
TuneClone is the software you are looking for if you have a big collection of iTunes music files to be converted. It automatically generates a virtual CD burner and simulates the burning and ripping process. All you need to do is install TuneClone and then burn your playlist to TuneClone virtual CD burner. And TuneClone will directly convert the music files to MP3 for you. It is very fast and all the artist, album and title information will be preserved perfectly.
1. Download TuneClone from http://www.tuneclone.com and install it.
It is fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista. A virtual CD Burner will be installed. This virtual CD-RW will be used to convert music files.
2. Set the default CD Burner to TuneClon CD-RW at iTunes.
Click menu Edit, select menu item Preferences..., and then select Advanced Tab. In order to keep the artist and title information of the music, the Include CD Text option should be checked.
3. Create a playlist, and then add the files you want to convert into the playlist.
4. Click Burn Disc button at the bottom right of the main screen of iTunes.
While the burning gets started, TuneClone will automatically convert the music file to MP3, WMA or WAV. You can open the manager screen to show all the converted music files.
The most important step is to choose the cd burner. Then the software can convert the music files automatically. It is exceedingly easy when you want to batch convert lots of files.

Software Gratis Nokia 6120 Classic

Nokia to make phone software free, buying out partners in consortium
Wednesday, June 25, 2008Nokia Corp. is buying the consortium that makes the software for its phones and making it available for free to other manufacturers, in hopes of blunting the influence of competing software providers.
Nokia said Tuesday that it is offering to buy the 52 percent of Britain's Symbian Ltd. that it doesn't already own for about US$410 million. Symbian's software is the most widely used on high-end phones.
Nokia will then establish a foundation with handset makers Sony Ericsson and Motorola Inc. and Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo to make the software available royalty-free. They will combine their three different versions of the Symbian software for advanced, data-enabled phones into one open platform.
AT&T Inc., LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., STMicroelectronics N.V., Texas Instruments Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC will also join the foundation, Nokia said.
Nokia said that all previous owners of Symbian, except Samsung, have committed themselves to accept the offer and that it expects Samsung to join them shortly.
While more than 90 percent of PCs run Windows, the market for cell-phone software is much more fragmented, with a dozen competing platforms. That means software developers have a much harder time creating applications, and raises costs for handset manufacturers and carriers that have to deal with many different systems.
In the race to set create a dominant standard for phones, the price of the software has become one differentiator. Symbian and Microsoft Corp. have been charging royalties for their software, but a leading challenger, the LiMo Foundation, will make software available for free. Google Inc. plans to give away its handset software, Android.
The foundation model addresses another concern from carriers and handset manufacturers, which don't want a single company to control the software like Microsoft does on desktops.
In giving away the software, Nokia is counting on the benefits of increased adoption to offset its upfront costs. Technology companies often donate the fruits of their research to nonprofit organizations with this in mind. Last year, Nokia gave away a low-power wireless technology called Wibree to the Bluetooth consortium.
Redeye analyst Greger Johansson in Stockholm, Sweden, said Nokia's move will make Symbian a tougher competitor to the other operating systems, considering that Symbian already has 60 percent of the smart-phone market. Symbian software has yet to be popular in the U.S., where the smart-phone market has been dominated by Research in Motion Ltd., Palm Inc. and manufacturers using Windows Mobile. Apple Inc., with its iPhone, is an up-and- comer.
Kevin Burden, director of mobile devices at U.S.-based ABI Research, said the move also should produce substantial savings for Nokia, which has been paying Symbian more than $250 million a year in licensing fees.
Nokia said it expects the acquisition to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2008 and is subject to regulatory approval. (****)

Media Studio 2.5 for Nokia (Update)
Thursday, May 29, 2008The speediest software on the planet and the only one that goes straight from DVD to Nokia. Watch feature films, tv and other video to your phone in great quality in full screen landscape mode. A memorycard as small as 128 Mb is enough to store a full length feature film or 100 minutes of home movies or tv recordings. You can watch your content on the go, on any Nokia phone, including the widescreen Communicators and the new N- and E-series, from a postage stamp size memory card. Never a dull moment with your movies in your pocket.
Stop waisting time with other 'smart' software and get 400% faster conversions. No need to use other programs to convert your DVDs, this one goes straight to your phone. Take blockbuster movies with you while you travel, or keep the kids busy in the car with their favourite cartoons. The software installs an encoding package on your Windows XP computer, you pick a DVD or video file from your harddrive and with only two clicks, the software turns it into a super small movie file, which will play on a special mediaplayer on the phone, or on the built-in Real Player. The headset or speaker can be used to listen to the sound. Subtitled and foreign language DVDs are also supported. Feature films and TV looks crisp and sharp on the phone and still fit on a relatively small multimedia card. Business travel was never so relaxed.
It supports all content (AVI, MPEG1, DivX, XVID, MPEG2, ASF) on all drives (Harddrive, CD, DVD, removable) on all Nokia phones. Unlike other software, we optimise and test the maximum possible video and audio bitrates for every individual Nokia model, so that you can enjoy the best possible quality and don't get a generic one-for-all video that looks mediocre. Try it and you'll be convinced that Nokia Media Studio is the best media suite for your phone on the market.
The following 41 Nokia phones are supported:
NOKIA 3230, 3250, 3600/3650/3660, 5500, 6230/6230i, 6233, 6235, 6260, 6270, 6280, 6600/6620, 6630/6638, 6670, 6680/6681/6682, 7610, 770, 7710, 9300/9300i, 9500, E50, E60, E61, E70, N70, N71, N72, N73, N80, N90, N91, N92, ,N93, N-Gage/QD

You can set the inactivity timeout after which the keypad is locked. You can also make use of the extended capabilities of the software. The ''In Main Screen'' mode will lock the keypad only if the phone shows the main screen. - the ''Exclude Applications'' mode allows you to select the applications which will not allow to block the keypad if one of these applications runs and you use it. ASOCS Unveils MP100 Processor - First Software Radio for Mobile Devices
Monday, May 19, 2008
ASOCS has introduced its new MP100 MultiComms processor, a single chip that is capable of supporting GSM, WiFi, Mobile TV, and GPS. By combining multiple interfaces on a single chip, the MP100 can reduce manufacturing costs by up to 50%, and could reduce power consumption by up to 70%.
The ASOCS MP100 is also software reconfigurable, which means that it can be updated to support future technologies such as LTE or WiMax via a simple software update. ASOCS partnered with Fujitsu to develop and manufacture the chip, using Fujitsu's SiExpress service to quickly manufacture the first batch of evaluation units for customers.
