Apple sells 1 million next-generation iPhones in first 3 days following release
Friday, July 18, 2008Apple Inc. said Monday it sold 1 million iPhones in the first three days its newest model was on the market.
"IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, in a statement.
However, Jobs did not address widespread software problems that plagued the launch.
On Friday, Apple's servers buckled as buyers tried to activate new iPhones in stores, while owners of older iPhones and the iPod Touch were updating and reactivating their devices.
In stores, employees who couldn't get the new iPhones working sent shoppers home to try again on their own later. At the same time, owners of the older phones were left with unusable units.
Reports of activation snags subsided over the weekend, as Apple's systems apparently recovered, and buyers were able to activate their phones through their home computers. As of Monday, the issues appeared to have been resolved, said analyst Charles Golvin of Forrester Research.
Apple did not respond to calls or e-mails requesting more information about the activation glitches.
Apple had sold about 6 million units of the first-model iPhone since it launched in the U.S. a year ago. The company has set a goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008.
Shares of Apple rose US$1.30 to close at $173.88. [AP]

iPhone 3G Gets Even Babies in Line
Sunday, July 6, 2008We all know that Apple's new iPhone 3G will be released on July 11 in the US (and other 22 global markets), so there are about six days left until then. Well, six
days don't seem to be enough for some US iPhone fans, as the line in front of Apple's Store in New York has already begun to take shape.
According to GearDiary, there are at least ten people in front of the Cube from Apple's New York flagship store. They have tents, sleeping bags, food and - the shocking part - there's a couple among them who came with their six-month old daughter. The couple says the baby will "probably" not wait all the time in the line. But that doesn't change the fact that a baby as young as six months should not be involved in such an action.
Apparently, this early group wants to set a world record. On their website, suggestively named Waiting for Apples, they have self-titled themselves "The Who Farmers", saying the record should be for the "longest time waiting in line to buy something". Well, as they will have to stay in front of Apple's Cube until July 11, 8 AM local time, when all the US Apple and AT&T stores start selling iPhone 3Gs, they do have some good chances to set a record.
Reading more about the mentioned website, I've found that these iPhone 3G fans say that, during the in-line wait, they will eat "local healthy food", and "especially Apples". Furthermore, they will talk to people who pass by about "local organic farming", since this is "a critical element to sustainable healthy living, food security, youth education, and climate change mitigation".
Well, all this is definitely weird, and the fact that it revolves around Apple's new iPhone will surely bring more publicity for the Cupertino-based company (as if necessary).

Google Talk Available On Your iPhone
Google released in the US a new version of Google Talk designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers. Here is more info:
In addition to sending your friends Gmail messages from your iPhone, you can now chat with them while you're on the move, too! In your iPhone browser, just go to www.google.com/talk, sign in and start chatting. That's it. Google Talk runs entirely in the browser so there's no need to download or install anything.
There are some differences from using Google Talk on your computer. For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPhone, the application needs to be open in your Safari browser. When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your status will be changed to "unavailable" and your Google Talk session will be restarted when you return.
Features:
-Chat with your Google Talk contacts in real time. Send and receive instant messages in chat sessions with your contacts. Move easily between multiple open chats.
-View and search for your Google Talk contacts. See the availability and status message of your contacts and change your own status on the go.
-Go off the record if you don't want to store your chats. Off the record chats are not stored on Gmail.

Japanese iPhone 3G Guided Tour
Apple Japan has posted a Japanese version of the iPhone 3G Guided Tour. No new information, but is surprisingly interesting to watch even if you don't understand the language. At one point the Chinese character recognition is demonstrated when they are showing off the international keyboards.

iPhone 3G Has a July 11 Competitor in Sharp SH706i
Friday, July 4, 2008
After the 923SH clamshell, which will be released tomorrow in Japan via SoftBank, Sharp has unveiled yet another new and advanced handset with an Aquos display: the SH706i. Unlike the 923SH, Sharp SH706i will not see the light of the Japanese market thanks to SoftBank, as it's scheduled for a release via NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile operator in Japan.
Sharp SH706i is a slider that weighs 117 grams and, when closed, measures 109 x 50 x 15.9 millimeters. The handset looks really nice, slid or not, and has three color versions: black, pink and aqua green. These only differ when the phone's alphanumeric keypad is unveiled, as that's the only part that gets to change its color, the rest of the device remaining all-black.
The Aquos LCD packed in Sharp SH706i is a wide 3.0 inch touchscreen one with 480 x 848 pixels and 16.7 million colors. Together with the handset's 1Seg feature, this display should offer users a nice mobile TV experience.
The other features of SH706i include: a "Touch Cruiser" navigation key, built-in GPS, 3G connectivity, Dolby technology for a high-quality audio experience, Media player with lots of formats supported, Bluetooth, bar-code reader, full HTML browser, support for Flash Lite 3.0, email, a 2 Megapixel camera with VGA video recording, multitasking capabilities and support for microSD and microSDHC cards (up to 8GB).
The price of Sharp's new good-looking handset is not yet known, but the phone will be available for purchase starting July 11, under the name of FOMA SH706i. This date coincides with the release of iPhone 3G, not only globally, but also in Japan, where it will be sold by the aforementioned SoftBank. I wonder whether Japanese users will care more about new iPhone than the Sharp slider... Either way, they surely have nice options to choose from.

Orange Launching New 3G iPhone on 17 July 2008
Sunday, June 29, 2008Europe : Orange will be launching the new 3G iPhone on 17 July 2008
- The 3G iPhone offers even faster internet access plus new features such as GPS and email via Microsoft Exchange
- Orange will be selling the 3G iPhone from €149, as exclusive operator
- Orange plan subscribers upgrading from the previous iPhone will be able to get the 3G version at a preferential rate
3G iPhone: the only mobile of its kind on the market
The 3G iPhone builds on the features that made its predecessor such a huge success: revolutionary mobile phone with touchscreen, iPod function, real internet access, and email.
In addition to the wealth of features available on the original iPhone, the 3G version adds 3G/3G+ technology, which with Orange covers over 66% of the French population today. Outside 3G coverage areas, mobile broadband is available via EDGE and Orange WiFi, with the iPhone switching networks automatically.
In addition to this wide variety of features, 3G iPhone customers also get advanced GPS capabilities, combining geolocation technology with the Multi-Touch interface, for trouble-free pathfinding.
The 3G iPhone also offers advanced email handling, with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, a key enterprise function bringing over-the-air synchronization, push mode (for contacts, calendar and email) and remote content deletion.
Orange exclusive
The 8Gb 3G iPhone will be sold at €149 with subscription to Orange for iPhone, Origami Star (from 3 hours), First and Jet plans. And the 16Gb 3G iPhone will be sold at €199, with the same plans.
With other plans (except time-cutoff and pay-as-you-go), the 8Gb iPhone will sell from €199 and the 16Gb model from €249. So from €32 per month (1-hour Origami Star plan), Orange continues to promote wide-scale mobile usages, offering customers unlimited internet access (*) from their iPhone.
Under the Orange loyalty upgrade programme, the 8Gb 3G iPhone will sell from €199 and the 16Gb version from €249 with a 24-month contract.
The 3G iPhone will also be launched for Orange Business Services clients on 17 July 2008.
Preferential upgrade offer for existing Orange iPhone customers
As an exceptional offer, Orange customers who bought an iPhone before 12 June 2008 and are using it with an Orange plan (except time-cutoff, Initial and Mobicarte) will be able to buy the 3G iPhone for €99 through a €100 refund valid until 31 October 2008, as part of the "Changer de mobile" programme (ie: Change your mobile) and subject to a 24-month contract.
The refund offer will be available to Orange Business Services clients from 17 July 2008.

3G iPhone To Cost Only $199 at AT&T
Sunday, June 22, 2008
The second generation iPhone, you know, the one that will soon come with 3G connectivity, might be cheaper than the first version, the EDGE-only one. This will be possible thanks to AT&T, the sole carrier who can currently sell the iPhone in the US (apparently, it will be the only one selling the 3G version too).
According to Fortune (that quotes someone "familiar with the strategy"), when the 3G iPhone will hit AT&T stores, the double-t carrier will subsidize its price, bringing the 8GB edition to only $199, from $399, and the 16GB edition to only $299, from $499. This discount will only be available to customers who also want to sign a two-year contract agreement with AT&T.
Now, before getting your hopes up – meaning all those who want a 3G iPhone – we have to mention that the "cheap 3G iPhone" is only a rumor for the moment, so until official statements from AT&T or Apple come out, you should stick to the thought that the long-awaited 3G handset will in fact have a "normal" price.
Anyway, if the $199 pricing proves to be true, the 3G iPhone will probably sell even better than the original one (I believe you remember the huge queues that formed outside AT&T's stores when the iPhone first came out). With such a price tag, Apple's handset will be accessible to a wider range of users, and they'll surely not miss the chance to get their hands on the 3G touchscreen device.
Besides the fact that it could cost as much as two Palm Centros, the 3G iPhone will (apparently) have a slimmer case, with about 2.5 millimeters, and it will also feature built-in GPS. So what we'll have is a 9.1 millimeters thick advanced piece of technology with even more features than the existent iPhone. I don't know why, but this sounds too good to be true. We'll see in June, when the 3G iPhone is rumored to be launched, if the price discount detail is true.
